該系統於 1990 年夏季宣佈。[1] 在 1990 年的 CES 上，Commodore 64 遊戲系統 在 Commodore 展臺蓋過了 Commodore CDTV。[2]
CDTV 於 1991 年推出。[3]
該系統於 1993 年停產。[3] CDTV 的銷量低至 30,000 臺，[3] 最高銷量也只有不到 60,000 臺。[4] 儘管 CDTV 銷量慘淡，但 Commodore 仍然嘗試在 Amiga CD32 中使用類似的概念。
CDTV 基於配備 1 兆位元組 RAM 的 Amiga 500 電腦。[5]
CDTV 代表 "Commodore Dynamic Total Vision"，[6][7] 而不是通常假設的 "Compact Disk TeleVision"。
