鹽水的密度,作為比重,可以用比重計或安東帕爾等設計的密度計來測量。結果測量值(通常是比重,但一些比重計測量波美度)將與水中總溶解鹽的質量直接相關。如果水中存在大量極細的懸浮顆粒,則該方法可能會失效 - 它們將包含在密度測量中。在野外,可以透過僅測量清水樣品、將樣品放入高筒中沉降或過濾樣品來避免這種情況。雖然這種方法提供了有關溶解鹽質量的資訊,但它沒有提供有關鹽的成分或電導率的資訊。
與大多數其他方法相比,使用比重計具有便宜的優勢。比重計由製造商校準,並且由於它們只是加重的玻璃,因此它們清楚地顯示出任何校準不足(它們會斷裂)。比重計的易碎性可能被認為是野外研究的缺點,但如果它們裝在比重計盒中,它們相當堅固。
比重計有幾個範圍,結果的精度取決於比重計的範圍。對於鹽湖研究,三套比重計可以方便地涵蓋整個比重範圍,從淡水(比重 1.000)到普通鹽的結晶點(比重 1.218),一直到瀉鹽的大致沉澱範圍(比重 1.300)。
比重計讀數需要根據溫度進行校正,因為較暖的水會膨脹並變得密度更低。
密度計價格昂貴,但有測量極精細解析度的版本。這些機器中使用的細玻璃毛細管 U 形管如果暴露在過高的熱量下可能會斷裂。這種情況可能發生在沙漠條件下在汽車中攜帶這些物品時。

無論比重計是讀取波美度、白利糖度、比重還是其他測量值,其使用方法都是相同的。這裡的說明適用於比重 (SG) 比重計。如果您使用其他型別的比重計,則可以使用表格將讀數轉換為 SG 或 TDS (g/L 或 g/kg)。
- 用鹽水樣品將量筒裝滿到溢位點
- 將比重計漂浮在鹽水樣品中
- 讀取並記錄比重計軸上的密度水平到水位
- 將溫度計插入鹽水樣品中
- 讀取並記錄樣品的溫度
- 根據樣品的溫度新增或減去密度度數(見下面的溫度校正)
- 在實驗室日記中記錄校正後的讀數
- 如果比重計要麼沉到底部,要麼漂浮過高而無法進行讀數,則說明您使用的是錯誤的比重計。選擇一個範圍不同的比重計。
- 所有比重計讀數都必須從讀取時的溫度校正到比重計的設計溫度。大多數比重計在 15.6 oC (60oF) 下校準。一些鹽場使用在 20oC 下校準的比重計。校準溫度在比重計軸上註明。使用前檢查任何比重計!
- 始終記錄未校正的讀數和溫度,以及校正後的讀數。如果出現誤算,除非原始資料可用,否則無法校正“校正”後的讀數!
