一種大型的身體盾牌，寬 2.5 英尺，高 4 英尺。在羅馬共和國時期，盾牌呈橢圓形，但在公元一世紀後期，矩形形狀開始被採用。盾牌通常被繪製上軍隊單位的徽章，並存放在皮革盒子裡，盒子上縫有與徽章相同的皮革碎片。在戰鬥中，當羅馬人向敵人衝鋒時，羅馬士兵會在自己身前舉起盾牌，這樣衝擊力就會將敵人擊倒在地。士兵們經常將盾牌靠在地上，蹲在後面戰鬥。這會降低士兵的重心，使其更難失去平衡，並讓他們的身體得到更多保護。
