[edit | edit source]這首詩被歸功於 托馬斯·懷亞特爵士，[3] 由 H5 錄入。懷亞特翻譯並改編了 彼特拉克 的 *Rime* 37，一首 *canzone*，在手稿中佔用了四頁，描述了分離的愛人對愛人的哀嘆。與 彼特拉克 對於歌詞是否能傳達給說話者所愛的人的不確定性不同，懷亞特的說話者確信它會安全地傳遞。懷亞特將這首詩命名為“在西班牙”，這表明這首詩是在 1537 年 6 月到 1539 年 6 月之間創作的，當時他擔任西班牙大使。[4] 雖然懷亞特模仿了 彼特拉克 的詩歌結構，但他採用了 poulter's measure 而不是彼特拉克復雜的韻律體系。用 Rebholz 的話說，poulter's measure 由“分別為六或七個抑揚格的韻律行組成，構成一個十三格（十二個 poulter）的詩行。”[5]
